Over the last 6 months, I have noted a focus from firms wanting to equip their Commercial Litigation teams with more talent, specifically those with skills in Insolvency, Restructuring and Liquidation. With a forecasted downturn in a variety of industries – the construction sector seeming to lead the way in 2023, firms are sensitive to the changing needs of their client base and think that this will almost certainly create a large pipeline of work for those experts in the sector or for those joining the sector.
There seems to be the appetite to hire Litigators with 3 years PQE up to 7 years PQE with salaries ranging from $120k to $200k+ . At the more junior level teams are looking for lawyers with solid commercial litigation experience, maybe having managed a few matters in this space but willing to learn.
Common traits required in commercial litigation roles tend to be:
- Those who can problem solve complex matters often with many moving parts.
- Apply the Law in a very practical manner.
- Work with professionals from other fields effectively e.g. Chartered Accountants/Liquidators.
- A numbers/commercial biased to their degree.
- A science/number brain as well as the ability to draft complex documents.
Typical firms looking for more experienced Litigators want to see the management of the process from start to finish including management of litigious matters, transactional restructuring, management of creditors, liaison with liquidators.
This side of the industry can be seen as “doom and gloom” but inevitably both HNWIs and commercial businesses need a competent and professional expert to manage their affairs if required. It can be satisfying to problems and wrap up these matters to the best outcome for all.
For experts in this space based in New Zealand, you can expect much larger, more complex files often with multiple stakeholders involved. In addition to this, you will be working in dedicated specialist teams that are much larger than those in New Zealand. In addition, there is further international work which leads to building wider experience and a personal brand across APAC and a much larger choice of opportunities in this space due to the sheer size and scope of the market in Australia.
