The EOFY isn’t just about the numbers, it’s about benchmarking your career and understanding where to next for the upcoming year ahead. As you and your team wrap up the numbers, use this time to also reflect on your growth, aspirations and where you want your career to go.
But how to know when to make the change? Look out for these red flags that indicate it’s time for your new opportunity.
🚩Lack of Growth:
The EOFY is the natural time to assess your growth – have you gained new skills? Have you taken on new responsibilities? Are you being challenged? And with the EOFY, have these skills then been put to the test? If you are looking at the same four walls of a job you were doing twelve months ago – it may be time to move on.
🚩Salary & Position:
Usually firms organise reviews around the EOFY – so if you haven’t got one in the calendar, you’re missing out! If you have been working above and beyond during what is a hectic time of year, and haven’t received a raise or promotion (without a clear reason as to why), chances are your employer is hoping you don’t notice! Ask yourself the question – do I feel valued for the work I have put in? Am I being paid my worth? If the answer is no – then it may be time to go.
🚩Work Life Balance:
Now you’ll be hard pressed to find a firm that has breezed through their EOFY and lets everyone have Friday’s off in March – but if you have been crawling your way to the end of this month, that also shouldn’t be the norm. Long hours, feeling drained, overworked and under appreciated can be a reflection of the EOFY crunch – but if you feel varying levels of this year round, seize control of your career and reignite your motivation at a new firm.
🚩Toxicity In the Workplace:
Whether it is during the EOFY or throughout, the team culture makes a massive impact on people’s job satisfaction. Whether it is top or middle management, colleagues, the clients you work with, or general ‘office vibe’ if it is impacting you negatively – look elsewhere. With so many opportunities in the market, why stay at a toxic workplace? Chances are there will be more suitable opportunities out there – maybe even your perfect one!
🚩Mental-Rut:
Nobody likes a Monday. But if you spend Sunday nights in the fetal position rocking to and fro with anxiety about the upcoming week – take the time to evaluate the cost vs reward of your job. No job is worth compromising your mental health, and there are jobs out there offering balance and support – you just have to look. Reach out to our team at Tyler Wren and let us help you with your job search.
🚩Future Concerns:
During the EOFY, a company’s ‘health’ can be put under a microscope and all cobwebs are cleared away. Have you witnessed budget cuts, hiring freezes, or restructuring plans? If you are seeing these implementations, chances are you are only seeing the top of the iceberg – take action and look for a more stable opportunity before you then have to compete against your colleagues.
🚩On The Fence:
Are you reading this article and agreeing with the signs? Don’t sit in a job that is making you unhappy waiting for the perfect reason to leave. Chances are things won’t ever line up perfectly – there will always be another EOFY busy season, or Christmas rush, or outside factors that make right now ‘not the right time’. Trust your instincts – if you’re ready to leave, utilise the fresh start of the EOFY to prioritise your career.
