We will be producing the salary & benefits guide each year. So far we have had a great response to the information from both Kiwis overseas and the local NZ market. Please let us know if you would like a copy. If you have already received it, we’d love your feedback in terms of the data and/or design of the salary guide. We want 2022/2023’s to be just as useful and informative as you look towards a new legal job opportunity for 2022.
Latest developments
The latest development in recruitment has been the option to delay the start date for roles that are being recruited for now. Many firms, especially those based in Auckland are making the decision to move flex-start dates to the New Year. This is for several reasons:
The uncertainty of lockdown levels leading up to the Christmas break means a somewhat “stop/start” induction process. Many firms have adopted a work-from-home culture. However, many still feel that being able to induct new staff face to face in their office environment. Deciding it is more optimal to build a team culture. It makes their new incumbent feel more comfortable and logistically able to ask/answer questions “on the fly” rather than through organised video calls.
Staff (as well as job seekers) including Partners are feeling fatigued. Leaders are sensitive as to whether the extra pull on resources is worth waiting for a fresh year.
In Auckland, there are bottlenecks of work requiring more attention which will continue to build during L3 lockdown.
The implications
For those relocating out of Auckland. This is simply unachievable due to lockdown level 3 for the next few weeks which again leads us into the holiday season.
What is interesting is that very few firms have cited a reason for not hiring currently to be instability or budget concerns. A very different message from the market that was somewhat starved of confidence during 2020’s lockdowns.
As a side note, for those individuals motivated to move and commence a new role in 2021. Firms are open to discussion due to not wanting to lose great talent.
