Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
Wanting to have a career change but also being comfortable and settled in your current role is a battle many of us have and will face at some point in our careers. It is a scary thought and takes courage to move out of our comfort zone, but if you’re currently in a role that you find yourself questioning if it’s time to move on, it probably is.

People sometimes forget that it’s not “just a job”. It’s your time, happiness, and health that is affected and takes a hit when you’re in a job that you no longer have an interest or a passion for. Absolutely no job is perfect, however, it is important to look for the one that means enough to you that you are willing to take on the bad days as you know they are outweighed by the good.

Some of the signs to look out for when considering if now is the right time for a career change:

  1. It just feels like “a job”

People who get full enjoyment out of their work will hardly find themselves dwelling on it being just a job. You should enjoy the challenge and it should bring you a sense of accomplishment and joy.

2. You don’t feel fulfilled

You don’t feel challenged and are stuck in the same position as when you started. There’s nothing to push you and you don’t feel like there is a chance to move forward in your current role.

3. Negative feelings towards the workload/ company are becoming more frequent

I highly doubt you will find someone who is 100% happy all of the time with their current role, there will always be ups and downs. But, when negative thoughts outweigh positive, then there is a problem.

4. You never look forward to going to work

Yes, Mondays can be draining every now and then and people hit the snooze button a few times. However, if you spend time on the weekend worrying about what the next week will bring, or wake up every morning dreading the day- it’s time to move on.

What’s next?

If your heart and passion are no longer in it, you need to figure out what exactly happened to make you feel like that to ensure it doesn’t follow you into your next role. Which part of the current job is the most draining to you? Will the same role in another company fulfill you?

  1. Understand what is bothering you

What you don’t want is for this situation to repeat itself in your next role. Therefore, take time to understand what exactly is giving you dissatisfaction in your job. Is it the workload? Co-workers? Boss? Environment? Does your workplace feel like the ‘Upside Down’?

2. What do you enjoy about your current role?

If you’re very unhappy in your job, it may feel difficult to think of what you enjoy. However, think back to the start and what the motivation was for you at the time. Then, figure out what you got fulfillment from and use that moving forward when job searching

3. Feels like it’s time to move on

Trust your gut. No one knows how you feel apart from yourself. And if a career change will make you happier and more content, then something has to change.

We spend a large portion of our time at our jobs, you have to evaluate your situation and check-in with yourself every now and then to make sure you still have a sense of purpose.

Is it time for a career change?

If you find yourself asking if it’s time for a career change, it probably means that it is. If you were fulfilled, these thoughts wouldn’t show up regularly. Yes, there are tough days for everyone, but you shouldn’t be consumed by more tough days than good days.
